Somoure is an artistic research project that explores the production processes, impacts and consequences of the development of assistive robotics.

The Yam is a robotic arm designed by the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (CSIC-UPC) to feed those people who cannot do it on their own. For nine months, the collaboration between the IRI and the artist Mónica Rikić has made it possible to rethink the robot from the perspective of assistive robotics not only as a technological problem to be solved, but as a network of interconnections necessary to shape expectations about what demographic change will entail.

Through the conceptual research process, the project has collected opinions on the presence and impact of assistive robotics on care work from specialists in philosophy of technology, sociologists, representatives of domestic work unions and other activists.

Júlia Borràs (IRI, CSIC-UPC), Karina Fulladosa (Sindillar), Daniel López (CareNet, UOC) and the artist Mónica Rikić will participate in this dialogue on care robotics, structures for the future and care. The aim is to reflect together on how care and society should be examined from a critical, reflective and interdisciplinary perspective. Subsequently, an informal space for debate with the public will be opened and the result of the artistic production of the project will be presented: a DIY replica of the Yam created through a collaborative design process. This replica aims to modify (hack) its form, behavior, and, most importantly, the architecture of the code to reflect various social concerns and other critical philosophical perspectives on robotics and care.

Currently, the Somoure project is exhibited at the Monastery of Sant Cugat as part of the biennial Manifesta15 Barcelona Metropolitana.

PROGRAM

18:00 – 18:05 Welcome
18:05 – 19:30 Dialogue: Healthcare robotics and care networks: how do we imagine our future?
19:30 – 19:50 Presentation of the Somoure project: artistic residency and robotic platform Nyam
19:50 – 20:30 Aperitif

PARTICIPANTS

Mónica Rikić. Electronic artist. National Prize for Culture of Catalonia 2021. She develops practice through code and creative electronics, combining them with non-digital objects to create electronic theatrical devices and robotic installations. His interest lies in social impact and critical thinking around alternative technologies through open hardware.

Júlia Borràs CSIC researcher focused on how robots learn to interact with the environment and on the design of robotic hands, with more than 15 years of experience in the field of research. She studied Mathematics at the UPC and Computer Science at the UOC, and received her PhD in robotics at the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (UPC-CSIC) in 2011. She spent 7 years doing research in the United States and Germany, and in 2018 she returned to Catalonia as part of a European robotic clothing manipulation project, won the prestigious Ramon y Cajal research grant and in 2020 she started as a senior scientist at the CSIC. She is currently doing research in assistive robotics and clothing handling, is editor of the international journal IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters and deputy director of the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics (CSIC-UPC).

Daniel López Gómez.
