The session, which brought together around twenty artists and cultural agents, was led by Noisette, a cultural consultancy formed by Aurélie Delater and Roos Dessing.

Over four hours of intensive and hands-on training, the speakers offered tools and strategies to help participants navigate the complex ecosystem of European funding. Through collaborative dynamics and group exercises, the session focused on the analysis and preparation of applications for calls targeting projects in the field of digital culture, and more specifically, those promoting transdisciplinary practice and research within initiatives such as S+T+ARTS, Horizon, or Creative Europe.

To synthesize the key learnings from the workshop we spoke with Delater, co-founder of the cultural consultancy Noisette and co-facilitator of the session. Drawing from her extensive experience with European funding in the arts and transdisciplinary practice, Delater shared practical advice, essential tools, and reflections on how artists can better navigate and succeed in international funding opportunities.

From your experience as an advisor and manager of European projects in the ASTS field: why do you think this type of training spaces as this workshop are important for artists?

Artists spend a lot of time and energy in applying to calls for residencies or for awards. This exercise requires specific skills that are not related to the artistic work. You can be an excellent practitioner but don’t get any funding, because you don’t know how to write good applications. I am very often part of juries for open calls, and I see a lot of talent, a lot of great ideas, but unfortunately many times the applicants are not selected because they don’t know how to describe their project, how to present a work plan, how to build a budget. I found that it was really a pity so I thought “let”s make a workshop where artists will learn how to decode open calls and put themselves in the shoes of an evaluator, so they can understand how it works on the other side”.

When applying to European calls that combine arts, science, and technology, what are the 3 most important tips for writing a strong application? What sets a truly outstanding proposal apart from the rest?

These are my trips:

Read the open call to fully grab what the opportunity is about, what is expected from you in terms of effort and output, and what are exactly the conditions. Read the guide for applicants if there is one, and consult the additional resources provided to build your application.

Present an original idea that aligns with the requirements of the call in terms of conceptual approach. Your project should embed a transdisciplinary dimension, and be nourished by scientific knowledge and the use of technologies. Don’t lose your artistic identity, but make sure that the opportunity is right for you, and the other way around.

The evaluators read a lot of applications, so be kind with them: be concise, et don’t exceed the number of characters allowed. You should facilitate the reading. You certainly want to say a maximum to show that you are the best candidate, but you should be able to do this in the frame that is given to you.

From your experience, which European programmes or platforms do you find relevant to support digital and transdisciplinary artists, and how would you describe the defining features transdisciplinary calls in European frameworks?

The biggest European programme for artists working at the intersection of science and technology is S+T+ARTS. On the starts.eu website, you find opportunities of open calls, but also resources and a great archive of projects. Some projects funded by Creative Europe also issue open calls for transdisciplinary artists, many to work with XR and AI at the moment. To spot them, artists can look at platforms such as On the Move or Creatives Unite, that share European open calls.

Usually, artists are invited to work with scientists and/or technologists, for the creation and production of an artwork. They receive support and guidance also from the cultural institution hosting the residencies. Many times, the experimentation is also documented and presented at talks or symposia.

What tools or resources would you recommend digital artists explore to better prepare for international funding opportunities or open calls?

When I decided to build this workshop, I realised that there was a lack of resources for artists to improve their skills in understanding open calls and writing compelling applications. In art schools, this is not taught either, which is a pity because writing applications is usually an important part of an artist’s life. A good way to get tools and resources is to connect with local artists communities such as HacTe in Catalunya.

You can look at resources to improve your skills on writing, and on how to pitch as a video is sometimes asked in applications. These might be general resources not specific to open calls, but they can help you. You can also study the evaluation criteria of past open calls that interested you, to understand how your proposals are ranked, so you can tailor your presentation accordingly. A chat with AI can help you to structure your texts, but don’t make it write your applications!

Writing applications can involve a lot of work. How would you recommend organising the process to make it more sustainable and efficient, especially for individual artists or small teams?

Each open call has its specificity but if you look at the overall picture, you can see that some sections are always asked: abstract of the project, portfolio, CV, budget. I would recommend to build these parts out of the rush of an application, to have time to finetune them, and to have them reviewed by peers or experts, to get feedback for improvement. This way, when an opportunity pops out, some parts are ready, and you can spend more time on tailoring others.

[109
117,122

post-7509","actualitat","type-actualitat","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-projects","tag-community","tag-transfer

Keys to decoding European calls with Aurélie Delater - HacTe

<meta property="og:description" content="On June 26, HacTe, the Barcelona’s Hub of Art, Science and Technology, organized the workshop Funding inspiration for the intersection of Arts, Science and Technology, with the support of Hangar and the Department of Culture of the Government of Catalonia.
