Both address the long process that has culminated in the creation of an infrastructure of more than 3,000m\u00b2 that has the support of the Tarragona Provincial Council, the Reus City Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Ministry of Culture, its role in the preservation of digital art, and the desire to place Reus as an international benchmark in the research and production of art linked to technology. From 9 October, the public will be able to visit its   <strong>First exhibition<\/strong>,  <strong>&#8220;Hello World!<\/strong>&#8220;, which covers six decades of digital art through 27 works from the NAF collection. Among the artists represented are Peter Weibel, Daniel Canogar, Ken Matsubara, Joan Fontcuberta, Marina N\u00fa\u00f1ez and Alba G. Corral. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hactebcn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Talleres-Reparacion-Urbetronica-1999-Marie-France-Veyrat-&#xA9;-Pau-Frigola-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8829\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Workshops &#8211; Urbetronic Repair 1999 &#8211; Marie-France Veyrat \u00a9 Pau Frigola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How did the idea of the New Art Centre come about and what role does the New Art Foundation play in its promotion?<\/strong><br\/>The NAC was not born from an isolated gesture, but from a twenty-year journey. After the BEEP Electronic Art Prize (2003), promoted by Arnau Puig, and consolidated as ARCO-BEEP (2006), complicities arose that gave rise to a collection, the Beep Collection (later New Art Collection), highlighted by a new way of working focused on production and work with the community, and, in 2013,  the NewArt Foundation. Since then, the Foundation has been a driving force and a building: producing, conserving and documenting technological works with artists, universities and research centres. The New Art Centre is the crystallisation of this process: a common home where this sustained work becomes stable, public and operational.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is the philosophy behind the project?<\/strong><br\/>We work from a matrix perspective (care, cooperation and trust), with systemic thinking (what is important are the links, not the sum of the parts) and cybernetic sensitivity (the observer is part of the observing system). We assume that we inhabit a cyborg continuum, where the human, the animal and the machinic coexist in unstable and situated assemblages. That is why the NAC is conceived as a living organism: a language in use that is rewritten with each gesture, work and relationship. Technology not as a fetish, but as a cultural and political medium where meanings are negotiated.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What needs does the new facility meet?<\/strong><br\/>An in-depth analysis of the environment and the detection of specific needs not only in production but also in conservation; the &#8220;last mile&#8221; of technological art. Works that require storage and custody, preservation, advanced restoration, spare parts, upgrades and trial time; projects that require residencies, co-production and a specialized warehouse that functions as an extended workshop. The NAC puts 3,000 m\u00b2 at the service of the ecosystem: 700 m\u00b2 of rooms, 600 m\u00b2 of workshops and multipurpose spaces, and 1,500 m\u00b2 of dynamic warehouse to produce, maintain and exhibit continuously. What normally happens behind the scenes is integrated here into the public experience, since the center functions as a systemic ecosystem, a transphysical architecture where everything interacts and everything is visible. A space in which the public interacts with artists, technicians and, of course, with the works.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hactebcn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Non-Dimensional-Cities-Marnix-de-Nijs-&#xA9;-Pau-Frigola-edited-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8841\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Non Dimensional Cities &#8211; Marnix de Nijs \u00a9 Pau Frigola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The preservation of digital art is a major challenge. What strategies are you developing in this regard? <\/strong><br\/>The basis of our work is the early detection of problems and the intervention &#8220;here and now&#8221;, in close communication with the artists and with the technical specialists. That is why we practice conservation in use: the works live by lighting up. We sustain this life with strict documentation and verifiable methodologies: interviews and validations with the artist, step-by-step protocols, decision trees, version of manuals, records and traceability of each intervention. Added to this is precise dependency management, exhaustive inventories, critical spare parts, disk cloning, system images and version control to anticipate errors and roll back changes. We complete with test benches, periodic calibration and fine-tuning, all supported by an active warehouse of 1,500 m\u00b2 (+\/-4,000 m\u00b3) with start\/rest and monitoring procedures. The idea is simple: to maintain operational continuity without betraying the intention of the work.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which facilities or projects have been the main references for you?<\/strong><br\/>We feel close to spaces that have worked at the crossroads of art and technology through practice and experimentation, such as Hangar (Barcelona), V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media (Rotterdam), Li-Ma (Amsterdam), ZKM (Karlsruhe) or Ars Electronica (Linz). Methodologically, we dialogue with <g id=\"gid_0\">mean variable<\/g> approaches, with process-based conservation and strict preservation. But the idea of the visible warehouse comes from centres not dedicated to this sector, such as the Schaulager in Basel or the Depot in Rotterdam.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you approach the relationship between the local, national and international spheres?<\/strong><br\/>Like a network of stairs that touch. At the local level, we work with schools, cultural, social and business fabric of Reus and the Camp de Tarragona. At the national level, we cooperate with art centres, museums, festivals, universities and collections to collaborate, co-produce, lend and tour. At an international level, we activate alliances with related centers and European networks. All this is the result of twenty years of work. Now the NAC works as a new node: an infrastructure at the service of the community that connects and circulates works, knowledge and people.     <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hactebcn.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Exhibition-Room-&#xA9;-Pau-Frigola-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8817\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Exhibition Room \u00a9 Pau Frigola<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you hope to involve the public and the territory around the NAC?<\/strong><br\/>Opening the center, creating a dynamic, didactic and participatory proposal where everything is interacted with and seen: exhibitions, assemblies, tests, fine-tuning and restorations are part of the visit. There will be mediation, technical tours and educational and social visits.<br\/>We promote residencies and co-productions with the local fabric (cultural institutions, festivals, companies and research centres), we open local calls, as is the case with the new grant to Reddis, and initiatives such as &#8220;Adopt a Work&#8221; invite citizens to sustain the life of the pieces. We don&#8217;t want the audience to look from the outside: we want them to enter the system, feed it and co-produce it.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do you imagine the future of the center?<\/strong><br\/>We want to be a reference service in Europe for the conservation and production of technological art; expanding residencies and co-productions; publish open guides and protocols; consolidate training programmes for local society, schools and centres, as well as for technicians, artists and curators; and to strengthen and expand the network of collaborations, co-productions, loans and touring. The future we imagine is progressive and alive: a center that learns from its practice, grows in layers and keeps alive the network that gives meaning to the works and the ecosystem. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>As members of HacTe, what synergies and complementarities do you see with the other members of the Association?<\/strong>  HacTe is the ecology where art, science and technology connect. The NAC provides infrastructure (workshops, laboratories, specialized warehouse), museum-technological knowledge and capacity for public activation; other members add R+D, transfer, community and creative enterprise. Together we can prototype, produce, document and show, tracing routes that go from research to exhibition and social impact.
