S+T+ARTS in the City Residences

In this video prior to their residency, the artistic collective DISNOVATION-ORG explains what their stay at the Institute of Photonic Sciences of Catalonia (ICFOi) will consist of, where they will work together with researchers from the center. Her project, ‘The Solar Share’, explores “planetary photosynthesis and its relationship with the energy needs of human beings”, says the artist Maria Roszkowska.

In this video prior to her residency, the electronic artist Mónica Rikic gives us an overview of her expectations with her stay at the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics, a centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). With this residency, Rikić wants to “create a new language or way of communication between robotic devices and humans through touch”.

The London-based artist Mark Farid tells us about his residency working together with researchers from the Open University of Catalonia. The result of this residency has been the ‘Invisible Voice’ project, where Farid reflects on social change and how to influence politics, structures and media through collectivization. The project addresses climate change in Barcelona from a comprehensive perspective: it is not an isolated phenomenon, but linked to all aspects of daily life, including work, habits and urban planning, seeking collective and interdisciplinary solutions.

The electronic artist Mónica Rikić has spent her stay at the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics, a centre of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC). During the research process, the artist has collected opinions on the presence and impact of assistive robotics on the care tasks of professionals in the arts and humanities, industrial designers, representatives of domestic work unions and activists. The resulting installation presents assistive robotics not as a technological problem to be solved, but as a network of interconnections that shapes our expectations about future demographic changes.

The result of this residency has been the project ‘The Solar Share’, an Edible Solar Coin that questions the predominant economic models with ideas drawn from the organisms that capture sunlight, essential for the metabolism of life on Earth. Presented as a one-square-meter microalgae bioreactor, this work highlights the human energy dependence on photosynthesis and proposes harvested edible microalgae as a radical economic unit.
